Do you ever wonder how long ago you opened a jar of mayonnaise or a storage container of leftovers? Is it safe to eat? Maybe if you are more organized than I am, this is not a problem. However, sometimes I find myself peering into a container of refried beans wondering if this is the one I opened yesterday or the one from last week that got pushed to the back of the shelf?

I now have a simple method to help determine if something is safe to eat or not. I label the top of the container with a date. If it’s a jar that I’m going to recycle, then I use a Sharpie to write directly on the lid. If it’s a reusable container, then I use removable tape and write on the tape.
