The hardest part of being vegan…

by | Dec 11, 2013 | Personal, Vegan

The hardest part of being vegan is not the food. Giving up meat was easy. I was able to do that 22 years ago. Giving up dairy and eggs was a little harder, that took me another 20 years. My only regret is that I wish I had done it sooner.

The hardest part of being vegan is other people.

Food is a deeply personal choice. I’ve found that people are as emotionally tied to their food choices as they are to religion and politics. In fact their religious and political views are often deeply intertwined with their food choices, as are mine. However, my choices are often in stark contrast and contrary to the vast majority of those around me. I find myself having to be apologetic about my choices to not offend them.

I heard this quote referenced in a Doctor Who episode. I believe the original quote can be attributed to Guy Kawasaki.

Better to fail at doing the right thing than to succeed at doing the wrong thing.

So, even though it is hard at times, I will continue doing what I know in my heart is right; for the animals, for the planet, and for myself.

This gives me hope that the cruelty that is factory farming is coming to light. This is hard to read, hard to look at, hard to process – even if you no longer eat meat or dairy. It’s also filthy and disgusting. If you eat meat, this is your food. My hope is that the other 97% (it is estimated that 3% of the US population is vegan) will take a peek behind the factory farming curtain and speak up to make changes.
