Vegan Path

I became a vegetarian in 1991 and a vegan in 2011. It is a big part of my life as it is shaped my values in positive ways. It is better for the environment, better for my health and without a doubt better for other animals with whom we share this beautiful planet.

Save 600 gallons of water per day by going vegan

May 30, 2014

California is suffering through a severe drought. We are all trying to save water wherever we can. One of the best ways is to cut meat from your diet. You can save almost 600 gallons per day eating a plant based diet! 600 gallons is like taking a 2 hour shower.

The hardest part of being vegan…

December 11, 2013

The hardest part of being vegan is not the food. Giving up meat was easy. I was able to do that 22 years ago. Giving up dairy and eggs was a little harder, that took me another 20 years. My only regret is that I wish I had done it sooner. The hardest part of…

Vegan vs. Plant Based

May 7, 2013

Recently, I’ve seen some vegan bashing on Facebook from “plant based” advocates. I think this happens in part because of the confusion of what the term vegan means. People often assume a vegan diet is healthy, but it doesn’t have to be. Plant based dieters want to remove themselves from the term “vegan” to not…

Vegan Vacation 2012 – Bay Area

August 26, 2012

We arrived in Pacifica just before noon on Saturday. Our best friends live there and it is a cherished destination. After settling in, we snacked while we visited. We had early dinner plans in Berkeley with some additional friends. They wanted to take us to a popular restaurant called Gather that focuses on locally grown,…

We just returned from a weeklong road-trip up the coast of California, over to the Eastern Sierras and then back home to Southern California. This is one of the first trips we’ve taken since adopting a vegan diet. Armed with the VegOut iPhone App and a cooler full of staples, we headed up the coast…

Food Choices Are The New Politics

May 1, 2012

I’ve been a vegetarian for more than 20 years. In that time, I’ve rarely been challenged about this choice. Occasionally, I have been asked questions that come off as defensive arguments, but mostly people are respectful, sometimes curious, and occasionally admiring. However, since transitioning to a vegan diet this year, I’m met more often with…

The Journey to Compassionate Eating

March 20, 2012

Omnivore Childhood I had the typical, albeit not healthiest childhood. I loved my orange Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, sugary Kool-Aid, and greasy fried chicken. I hated vegetables and tolerated fruit. I was the last one anyone expected to become a vegetarian. I never really thought about food in terms of what I should eat. I…

Vegan Baking

November 12, 2009

Although, I’m not a vegan, I have been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for 18 years. Lately, we have been cutting back on dairy and eggs. I’ve experimented with using soy milk in place of cow’s milk since we don’t have it in the house anymore. I’ve found that it actually works better in quick breads. It…
